BAND CAMP 1997

James Martinez (class of '96, right) and 1995-96 co-Drum Major Louis Malave (c/o '96) accompany and advise this year's solo Drum Major Andrew Krueger (c/o '98) prior to the start of Band Camp.

Mr. Farmer greets the new group before getting down to business.

Junior Anna Rupert plays her heart out during a musical rehearsal.

"I already know all this stuff! I feel so goofy doing this," comments junior David Bokor as the students become (re)acquainted with marching styles.

The Dancerettes joined the instrumentalists during the second week of Band Camp '97, preparing for another spectacular year of performances.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

The band rehearsed inside the band room for the first night, thanks in part to light rain outside.

After the picture for the football program was taken, the band scattered about the field (left), awating instruction from Mr. Farmer (center) and band leaders. At the same time, sophomore Estée Olivera and senior Aaron Horn, both alto saxophonists, take time to relax from the action (right).

The clarinetists, foreground, rehearse their steps in the midst of another beautiful sunset. The practice concluded at 9:00 following a rush to the water coolers.

LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING: HHS AT DURANT

The 1997-98 band makes their debut, stunning the Durant crowd.

The "third-quarter break" chant works everytime. A sea of red, full of band members, develops outside the visitors' concession stand.

A scene reminiscent of the surprise loss at King in 1996; the band stares dazed and shocked as a late game-winning field goal is ruled "no good" by field judges.

DEJA VU: HHS vs. EAST LAKE

Mr. Farmer proudly leads his band into Chelo Huerta Field for pre-game activities.

As drum major Andy Krueger conducts the band in the national anthem, Mr. Farmer and others salute Old Glory.

The Dancerettes were the highlight of this part of the show, catching the attention of all spectators.

Despite the unanticipated loss to the East Lake Eagles, band members still gather around the sacred "H" and perform the school alma mater.

LACTOSE-INTOLERANT FELINES:
HHS AT H. B. PLANT

How did Venus Broadhurst manage to load the sousaphone bell onto the truck with it over his head? With his x-ray vision, of course!

These bright and beautiful ladies of the Dancerette squad -- from left, Yakima Richardson, Alysha Cobb, Trimesha Buxton, Constance Henderson, and Naomi Robinson -- pose for this unique shot while finding refuge from the rain.

Vanessa Valdez, right, halts a soaked Miss Fullam's futile attempts to evade the soaked photographer's camera lens.

Mr. Farmer, left, observes the band's third field performance of the season while his Plant counterpart, Mr. Bob Keene, applauds their efforts.

Dancerettes prance joyously to the tune of the fight song, reacting to the Terriers' first win of the season.

BAND GOES ON "STRIKE"
WITH PLENTY OF TIME TO "SPARE"

As drum major Andy Krueger (left photo, left) approaches the lane to try to convert a difficult split, a band member on the lane next to him appears to wipe away a tear as his bowling ball falls into the left channel. On the other end of the alley (right photo), senior Kyle Shaw, trumpeteer, collapses in disbelief after his striking streak ended at four.

This bowler was not the only one using their own distinct bowling techniques to score big. This particular roll surprisingly resulted in a bonafide 10-pin strike.

The satisfaction of this student clearly shows after falling eight bowling pins, which counted as a strike in the "eight pin no tap" scoring system.

This student went far above and beyond the call of duty to rescue a misplaced pin stranded in the gutter.

Some students made rather impressive one-game scores. Other students needed more practice, though. The highest scorer was senior Andy Bennett, who received the grand prize (a bowling ball, appropriately) during the September 22 rehearsal.

WIPEOUT: HHS vs. C. LEON KING

The entire game was plagued with excessive precipitation. The rain came down in buckets just in time for the King game. Many drainage pipes, like this one behind the band room (left), resembled mini-waterfalls. Following Mr. Farmer's cancellation of all music performances, many band members attempted to watch the game from Huerta Field. The downpours resumed, and many of them came running back for shelter, including seniors Emily Maggio and Andy Bennett (right picture).

ONE-SIDED COMPETITION:
HHS vs. SARASOTA RIVERVIEW

Up close and personal with the band in action. At left, drum major Andy Krueger trots off the field in admirable fashion to conduct the band at the start of the show. The sparkling Dancerettes continue to perform their amazing trickery for the spectators. Freshman saxophonist Shereece Dendy, right, concentrates on her marching and playing techniques during the opening song.

The concession stand workers, comprised mainly of band and Dancerette parents, prepare the food and themselves for the horde of band students at third-quarter break.

DOG CHOW: HHS at GAITHER

Three's company: These students were exhausted even before the game began. From left, saxophonist Jacob Cole (12th grade), French horn player Adam Horn (9th), and saxophonist Donovan McFeron (11th) doze off briefly while en route to Gaither.

Percussionist Michael Coles, sophomore, pounds away at his quads as the football team made another touchdown.

Freshman percussionist Matt Farmer (directly related to Mr. Farmer, by the way) and others assemble the next in a long line of "fence messages" directed toward the opposing band.

Hillsborough's Dancerettes and Gaither's Starettes intermingle during the fourth-quarter band officers meeting.

HAIL TO THE TERRIER: HHS at CHAMBERLAIN

The Big Red Band shows off in front of Chamberlain's crowd. Top, the band takes position at the start of their performance. In the piece "September," the Dancerettes take over the show with high kicks and other impressive moves (bottom photos). Since the band occupies such a wide area of the football field, the entire group could not be photographed in one frame.

The spotlight's on you: Senior Dancerette Allison Huston and senior trumpeteer Kyle Shaw provide a light touch as soloists for the ballad, "Smile."

Senior clarinet section leader Kimberly Gryn and Venus Broadhurst wrestle over who gets to wear the headdress of the Chamberlain drum major Sean Hankins (right).

A BELATED TREAT: HHS vs. EAST BAY

Band director George Farmer gets interactive with the band early on, first by the school salute during the playing of the alma mater (left), then by giving his commentary on game developments (right image) as senior tuba player Michael Rupert, center, and junior tuba player Jarvis Davis listen.

Performing the crowd-pleasing cadences are, from left, percussionists Franklin Richardson (11th grade), Ben Levin (11th), and Zach Goldman (10th).

Trombone player Roland Oliver, freshman, mimics dancerette Lauren Johnson, freshman, during fourth-quarter entertainment.

RUINING OF THE BULLS: HHS at BLOOMINGDALE

Before the buses left, though, band members hung an older version of the marching banner outside the bus windows for a photo op.

"C'mon, let's make some noise!" urges loyal band alumnus Louis Malave (class of 1996, second from right). Accompanying Malave in the front of the band are, from left, Mrs. Susan Farmer, Miss Fullam, Vanessa Valdez, Andy Krueger, and Mr. Farmer.

Junior snare drum performer Ben Levin strikes a pose at the end of the game.
